From The West
WB Don Milligan SW
I was pleased to represent our lodge by attending the 90th Birthday event for our WB Calvin. I was early because my Lady Betty and I had stopped for a good steak lunch before hand and by the time we arrived early she was in need of a bathroom. Anyway, the Lodge was open with a few vehicles parked outside. We immediately encountered WB Calvin's Lady at the door. She was supervising the recording of events for their scrap book. I advised her of the name tag we were going to present to him. She had to see it and said that it would be treasured by him for the rest of his life. She also advised me that he was a Past Master of Oriental Lodge # 87 of Denver, CO in 1961. She had to take me into the dining room and show me the picture of him and his line of officers that year together with the plaque with his reigning gavel attached. There were posted pictures of him all the way back to when he was eight years old.
As time passed, the dining room and parking lot began to fill with family members from other states including Colorado as well as Arizona. I had a very long talk with WB Calvin who is very proud of our fraternity with experiences from places he has visited. There is one question I did not get around to asking due to the sheer number of people wanting to talk, hug or take pictures with him. That is, why he and his officers wore plain white aprons for their official lodge picture. Oh well, that can await another time.
I learned from his lady that she will not let him drive at night therefore he is not able to attend lodge all the evenings he may want to. So, I advised her to give me or the secretary a call because I or someone could meet him and take him to lodge. He lives off of Ajo near Old Tucson.
I got the feeling that there was a reason WM Jim was not available to attend this function in that there were people from many years ago who recognized me and made a point of coming over to talk. Mrs. Joe Wilhite (he was our lodge secretary for many years before Alzheimer's and death took him away) as well as Aaron Daylight Lodge. He and his wife was also treasurer for five Masonic activities at one time. She was one of them.
All together members of Marion Mc Daniel 56 were WB Spomer, WB/WP Frank Barnes, BR Alfred Curtin III and I.
