Brethren, the year is drawing to a close; the cooling breezes have replaced the asphalt-melting heat of summer, we've passed the autumnal equinox (I bet you thought for once I'd omit an astronomical reference) and the days are shortening. But my love of climate and other trivia aside, there are a couple of important items I feel need to be brought up. First, our Worshipful Brother Secretary is recovering from surgery; medical science might be directly responsible for this good bit of fortune but the many good thoughts and prayers can't have hurt and on both accounts I am deeply grateful. Second, next Monday, October 3, 2016, is the Stated Meeting as well as being move-up night. Move up night is always fun and we are fortunate to have the pedestals occupied by officers of great ability, knowledge and brotherhood. We are also to be favored with a visit from the Junior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Arizona and these visits are always interesting and enjoyable. So I encourage all Brethren to attend Lodge to support the future, give thanks for there.- WM John

I love the symbolism of FM. I believe we cannot understand the depth of FM without looking beyond the face value of our symbols. Take for instance the 47th problem of Euclid, what do those 3 little boxes stand for? It all starts with the math. "In any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the two sides is equal to the square of the hypotenuse." (The hypotenuse of a right triangle...which is the longest "leg"...or the 5 side of the 3:4:5:). The square of 3 = 9, of 4=16 (9+16=25) and the square root of that is 5. (Hang with me!). When we write down the square of the 1st four numbers (1, 4, 9 and 16), we see that by subtracting each square from the next one, (4-1=3 /9-4 = 5 /16-9 = 7) we get 3, 5 and 7. These are the steps in the Winding Stair which leads to the Middle Chamber and they are the number of brethren which form the number of Master Masons necessary to open a lodge!
With this simple geometric 3:4:5 ratio of how to create a 90 degree, Right Angle: Man can reach out into space and measure the distance of the stars ...in light years! He can survey land, mark off boundaries and construct every single thing on Earth. He can build homes, churches and buildings, and with the knowledge of this simple ratio...he can begin digging on opposite sides of a mountain and dig a straight tunnel through the center of it...that meets exactly at the center! He can navigate the oceans and be able to locate himself in the middle of the water (with no land in sight)...AND is also able to calculate how far he has come and how much farther he must go!
The knowledge of this simple geometric ratio also teaches each of us to not only be general lovers of the arts and sciences, but to stand in awe of the God-given knowledge with which you can take a piece of string and 4 sticks...and be able to find your way home!...from anywhere on Earth, on the Sea or in the Heavens. The 47th Problem of Euclid represents such a perfect symbol of Freemasonry...encompassing both art and science, that the simple knowledge of it demands a breathtaking awe to which we may only bow our heads in reverence at the perfection, the universality and the infinite wisdom and fundamental powers that our creator has bestowed upon us!...AND it all begins by simply learning how to Square your Square.

Sadly, I must miss our Stated Meeting this month. Work rears its ugly head and I must spend time in Holland, MI. and away from my Brothers. It pays for Masonry. But I will be visiting Unity Lodge No. 191 for their Stated Meeting so that I won’t lose my edge. They’ll be celebrating their Anniversary on Oct 1! – WB Rod
